Dizzy and Ringing Ears

A person having Meniere’s disease would usually feel the same symptoms over and over: fullness in the ears, progressing hearing loss, feeling dizzy and ringing ears.  Some may also feel symptoms of nausea and vomiting.  Usually, a symptom of vertigo signals the onset of a Meniere’s disease attack and it typically endures anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.  There is also a possibility for collective attacks may also happen within the same timeframe.  A person normally feels very tired and needs to rest for several hours after an episode.

An attack is both unexpected and debilitating.  There are cases where a person gets an attack that lasts several days.  Problems with hearing will improve only when the episode ends but usually gets worse later on.  Aside from the hearing problems, one may also feel extra sensitive to sound, have jerky eye movements, get dizzy and ringing ears.

The problem usually lies in the proper management of episodes.  Most of us are not aware of the proper ways to manage the symptoms especially the vertigo.  Here is what you must do:

·         Let the patient lie on a flat surface instantly and have him or her stare on an immobile object.

·         Do not give water for it may cause vomiting.

·         Have the patient lie down and allow him or her only to get up when the symptom totally subsides.

·         Let the patient sleep and rest after an episode to allow him or her to recover from the exhaustion.

Treatment for Meniere’s is directed towards assisting patients in dealing with symptoms and the prevention of a frequent recurrence.  Some treatments used are stress management, anti-vertigo medicines, vestibular training, hearing aids and some remedies to alleviate the ringing in ears.  The diet may also be geared towards a low salt diet and caffeine, alcohol and tobacco must be avoided.

Proper treatment and management of Meniere’s disease is necessary as a constant episode which usually causes vertigo attacks is dangerous for your ears.  Frequent attacks of vertigo can damage your hearing in the long run.  As you slowly lose part of your sense of hearing, you also begin to hear a ringing in the ears.  It is not only the symptoms of aural fullness, progressive hearing loss, feeling dizzy and ringing ears that one must lookout for.  The most important thing that you need to pay attention to are the vertigo attacks which should be given proper management and control.
